a number of 意思是「許多...」,後接複數名詞,謂語通常用複數：
a number of students were absent from the meeting.
許多學生沒有到會.
the number of 意思是「.的總數」,後接複數名詞,但謂語要用單數：
the number of students absent from the meeting was surprising.
沒有到會的學生人數很驚人.
所以由上可知,兩者之後都可加複數名詞,但謂語動詞用法不一樣!

a number of表示許多；the number of表示什麼的數量。

兩者區別：
1、意思上不同。a number of表示「許多」，相當於 many；the number of表示「……的數量」。
2、中心詞不同。a number of+名詞做主語時中心詞是所加的名詞；the number of+名詞做主語時中心詞是number。
3、謂語動詞要求不一樣。a number of謂語動詞用複數；the number of謂語動詞用單數。
